Full Overview
Located on the lower slopes of the Doddabetta Peak, the Government Botanical Garden is one of the most visited tourist attractions in Ooty. Established in 1848, the garden spans approximately 55 acres and is maintained by the Department of Horticulture, Government of Tamil Nadu.
Designed in an Italian-style layout, the garden is home to thousands of species of flowering plants, shrubs, ferns, orchids, bonsai trees, medicinal plants, and rare exotic flora collected from different parts of the world. The meticulously maintained lawns and vibrant flower beds create a stunning visual experience for visitors throughout the year.
One of the major highlights of the garden is the fossilized tree trunk believed to be over 20 million years old. Visitors can also explore the conservatory, fern house, lower garden, Italian garden, and nurseries that showcase a rich variety of plant life.
The annual Summer Flower Show, held during May, attracts thousands of tourists and gardening enthusiasts from across the country. During this period, the garden comes alive with spectacular floral displays, artistic flower arrangements, and horticultural exhibitions.
The cool climate, scenic surroundings, and peaceful atmosphere make the Government Botanical Garden a perfect destination for nature lovers, photographers, families, and couples. Visitors can enjoy leisurely walks through the lush greenery while admiring panoramic views of the surrounding Nilgiri Hills.
